The Big Spring Clean Is On In Limerick!

Updated : Mar 19, 2009

Every year hundreds of thousands of people from every corner of the country come together to clean up their local areas during the ‘Spring Clean’ month of April and to give their time to make Ireland a cleaner place to live.

Almost 6,000 tonnes of litter, of which 35% was recycled, was collected by volunteers around the country in 2008. Volunteers from 55 groups in Limerick City and 209 groups in Limerick County accounted for over 5.5% of the total participants nationwide.

“In the current era of climate change the more we recycle, the more we reduce our carbon emissions. By taking part in National Spring Clean we are making a real difference,” explained Lorraine Power, Environmental Awareness Officer, Limerick County Council.

She continued, “Most participants see National Spring Clean campaign as a positive and fun way of coming together with their neighbours to ensure their road, estate, park, parish, village or community is cleaner. Participation in National Spring Clean is open to all, including individuals and community groups such as residents’ associations or Tidy Towns committees, development associations, sporting organisations, youth groups, schools and businesses.”

Sinéad McDonnell, Environmental Awareness Officer, Limerick City Council expressed her hope that this year’s campaign would be most successful to date.

“The strength of this campaign has been the wide level of community involvement it has enjoyed right around Limerick City and County. Every year we have seen the numbers grow and we expect that trend to continue this year. We would also like to encourage people to recycle as much of the litter as possible using the colour coded bags,” she added.
