Composs Week!!

Updated : Apr 7, 2009

A series of free information events for householders and students who are interested in home composting and wildlife gardening will take place throughout County Limerick over the coming weeks.

VeryHappyPig can make his own homemade composs!

Limerick County Council, in association with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council, will host the home composting workshops at the UL Farmers Market (12-5pm, Tuesday 14 April), Kilbehenny Community Centre (7.30–10pm Tuesday 14 April) and Coláiste Iosaef, Kilmallock (7.30-10pm, Thursday 23 April).

Lorraine Power, Environmental Awareness Officer said the upcoming events presented householders and students with an excellent opportunity to learn the correct skills for successful composting.

She continued, “Organic waste like food scraps and garden waste can be easily composted and can represent between 30% to 50% of waste in the average household. Composting your organic waste will not only help you to reduce your domestic waste bill, but it will also help to divert waste away from landfill.”

Mr. Power added that the upcoming events would provide members of the public with a comprehensive understanding of composting, different composting systems, what materials can and cannot be composted, troubleshooting and how to compost effectively.

“The Clare/Limerick/Kerry Waste Management Plan stresses the importance of preventing waste, and composting is a great starting point. Therefore, I urge householders in County Limerick not to miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn about compost, leaf mould, wormeries, and how to attract wildlife into the garden. Participants can also have their queries answered by an expert”, she concluded.
