New Radio System For Gardai And Ennis Get 17 New CCTV Cameras
Updated : Apr 8, 2009
Tetra, the long-awaited Garda digital radio system, is due to go live next week in parts of Dublin. "The main benefit of the new system is security," said a senior Garda source. "It will deal with ambient listening -- people listening in [to Garda conversations] on scanners." Under the old analogue system, criminals could jam the system. "They can’t do that under the new system. If a radio is stolen we can just stun it from the network." Tetra Ireland -- comprising Eircom, Motorola and Sigma Wireless -- will be responsible for the maintenance of the technology. The system is scheduled to be rolled out to all Garda divisions within two years.
Meanwhile, a new CCTV system is to provide much-needed cover for Gardai fighting crime in Ennis, Co. Clare. The town will now be monitored 24 hours a day by a total of 17 new cameras. Ennis Chamber of Commerce boss Rita McInerney said: “It will assist Gardai by combining with business’ own CCTV in the detecting of crime.â€
