Positive Job Save Talks Underway

Talks aimed at saving jobs at courier company DHL are due to get under way today.

Unions and management are meeting to discuss the planned lay-off of 320 workers across its Irish operations.

The lay-offs were announced on Thursday and are due to come into effect in August.

Helpline for Irish Emigrants

A new helpline has been set up for forgotten elderly Irish emigrants living in New York, it was revealed on Sunday.

The service, modelled on a similar initiative in Co Meath, will help older expatriates struggling with loneliness, depression or isolation.

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin, who launched the free helpline during his visit to the US, said it was vital for the city’s Irish community to have a focal point.

“For our community in New York it is often the local Irish Centre,” he said.

“However, there are many who do not live near a centre and find it difficult to travel.

“We cannot allow those members of our community to live in isolation or to disappear.”

The helpline will be staffed by 50 elderly volunteers in Irish centres in the Bronx and Manhattan.

It is based on a Seniors Helpline which was set up in Summerhill, Co Meath, in 1998.

The service is supported by the Irish Government, the City of New York and Irish Centres in the city.

New Liffey Bridge To Arrive Today

A new bridge for the River Liffey is due to arrive at Dublin Port today after a week-long journey by sea from the Netherlands.

The 120-metre Samuel Beckett bridge will link Guild Street on the north quays with Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south of the river.

It was designed by Dr Santiago Calatrava Valls and constructed in the Netherlands.

The bridge has four traffic lanes, cycle tracks and footpaths and will be able to rotate 90 degrees to facilitate maritime traffic.
