Expensive Phone Bill
Updated : May 12, 2009
An estimated €4.5m worth of old mobile handsets stashed away in Irish homes and that amount of cash could be used to help charities.
One in four mobile phone users under the age of 35 change their handsets every year, but one in four households also have at least three mobile phones simply sitting, unused, in drawers.
The research has highlighted the potential to raise money for charities, such as the Irish Heart Foundation.
The charity has appealed for everyone in Ireland to dig out their old phones to raise money for the charity. Freepost envelopes are available by calling 1800 303136.
Monies raised will help to fund the Irish Heart Foundation's helpline, a dedicated lo-call number 1890 432 787, which offers confidential, professional medical advice about heart health and managing a heart condition.
Newstalk presenter George Hook and RTE personality Lucy Kennedy have lent their support to the campaign.
"I certainly will be digging out my old phones from under the bed," said George.
