Feel The Force--Darthmouth Park To Re-Open

Updated : Jun 11, 2009

A businessman agreed to reopen Dartmouth Square park to the local community and the public at large until the end of the year.

Athlone-based businessman Noel O'Gara had bought the Raheny based park for a paltry €10,000 four years ago and had his own ideas about what to do with the space.

Ongoing rows with the residents and Dublin City Council seemed to ensure that Dartmouth Square was never far from the headlines.

At one stage, Mr O'Gara -- who ran in the Dublin South bye-election and garnered just 172 votes -- sparked outrage when he locked the gates to the public in 2006 while trying to set up a tile showroom and car park there.

But peace is about to bloom after an apparent detente between the Athlone businessman and the residents, and tonight the park will host a star-studded party to celebrate its public reopening.

local resident and environmental activist Peter O'Brien who met with Mr O'Gara.

Stephen Rea and David Mathews, fashion designer John Rocca, singer-songwriters Damien Rice, David Kitt, Mundy, Gavin Friday and Ronan O'Snodaigh, will tonight join residents to celebrate the official reopening.

Mr O'Brien, whose father was the jazz pianist Peter O'Brien, said his "anti-establishment" stance and rational approach to the dispute appear to have won over Mr O'Gara.
