Irish Students Cycle 4000 Miles To Gaza For Charity
Updated : Jun 19, 2009
Four students are set to make a 4,000-mile cycle ride from Ireland to Palestine to raise money for medical aid to Gaza.
Eoghan Quinn (21), Ronan Sheehan (21), John Maher (30) and Gearoid O Cuinn (29), decided to make the journey after a blockade on medical supplies to the war-torn region.
Mr Maher, a University College Dublin medical student, said: “Eoghan is type one diabetic and coeliac, and we were talking about how he would be in trouble if he was in Gaza on his own at the time of the embargo on medical supplies before Christmas. The idea was percolated from there.â€
The four intend to cycle across 14 countries in 40 days and will set off from Waterford on Monday, The Evening Herald explained.
Wednesday, they met TDs, including Michael D Higgins, Ciaran Cuffe and Aengus O Snodaigh at the Dail.
Mr Maher said they were hoping to have fun, despite the tough challenge ahead. But he said: “I live in Dublin and I have cycled into town a few times but that would be about the size of it.â€
The team's journey can be tracked on their website www.pathwaystopalestine.com.
