Industrail Playground-Gasworks Converted For Kids

Updated : Jun 30, 2009

A former industrial site dominated by a tall brick chimney is now host to children after its transformation into Dublin's latest park.

Chimney Park, an innovative play area for youngsters, has opened after a year's development in the docklands.

Built on the site of Dublin Gasworks, it is one of the last projects in the redevelopment of Grand Canal Dock. It incorporates the restored redbrick chimney as its centrepiece, with other features including a mirror wall and water-play theme according to the Herald.

The landscaping echoes the naval and industrial history of the site, said the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA).

By 2015, Dublin Docklands is expected to have a population of 42,500 and it is a priority of the DDDA to include kids recreational facilities to keep families in that part of the city.

Opening the park, Environment Minister John Gormley said: "Chimney Park is intended to primarily provide for the amenity and play requirements of all children and families living in the area and also to serve the working and visiting population.

"The final design has transformed the site into an oasis for children, office workers, teenagers and local residents."

Niamh Brennan, chairman of the DDDA, said: "Following extensive remediation works at a cost of €48m, the [Dublin Gasworks] site has been developed into a world-class city quarter."
