RTE Presenter Does African Road Race For Charity

Updated : Jul 6, 2009

RTE presenter Des Cahill has revealed he is taking part in a gruelling African road race.

Africa's biggest and highest road race will see 150 Irish volunteers running alongside Ethiopia's renowned long-distance runners in aid of charity in November.

Des Cahill is participating in the 10km road race, at a height of 10,000 feet, alongside multiple World and Olympic title winner Haile Gebrselassie and 30,000 other runners according to the Herald

The fundraiser is being run by Orbis Ireland, a charity working to eliminate preventable blindness and restore sight to rural villagers in Ethiopia by 2012.

Cahill says he's not planning on doing any training for the race, despite the high altitudes and elite participants.

"Frankly, no. Ten kilometres is six miles so I can walk it or shuffle along at least. And it'll be a huge crowd so if I allow enough people to block me, I'll be grand," he joked.

"The world elite will be running at the front of it.

"It's hard asking people to fundraise, but rural Ethiopia is at a greater disadvantage than here."

For every Irish person who runs the race, more than 100 people's sight will be restored.

Orbis Ireland are still looking for people to sign up to the race, and raise €3,000 each for the charity.

VeryHappyPig loves to hear about charitable Irish people!
