Ireland Punches Above Its Weight Internationally!

Updated : Jul 14, 2009

Ireland makes a strong contribution to United Nations, and shows that a country does not have to be large and powerful to have influence on international affairs, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon told the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee today.

Saying that Ireland “punched above its weight” in its contribution to, and influence on global issues, Mr Ban paid tribute to Ireland’s involvement to UN peacekeeping over the last fifty years.

He also expressed support for attempts to secure the release of two GOAL aid workers abducted in Sudan in recent days.

Committee members asked the Secretary General a range of questions covering issues including the situation in Sudan, Ireland’s role in UN Peacekeeping, UN reform, the Middle East, Climate Change and Women’s rights.

Committee Chairman, Michael Woods TD said;

“It was a great honour and privilege to welcome the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon to the Committee meeting today.
Ireland is a strong advocate of the purposes, principles and potential of the United Nations and can be rightly proud of its role the history of the United Nations. We are also equally committed to playing a full part in its future.
The Secretary General strongly endorsed Ireland’s input into UN activities to date and urged the Committee to continue its scrutiny of pressing international matters. The Committee also very much appreciates his support for efforts to release the two abducted Irish Aid workers.”

VeryHappyPig has to say Ban Ki Moon has said a lot of very good things about Ireland over the last few weeks. For the positive news feeds VeryHappyPig, Irelands only good news only website, would like to thank him.
