South Dublin Winners Clock Up 32m In Prize Money
Updated : Jul 17, 2009
County Dublin is fast becoming one of Ireland’s luckiest locations. In less than three months, there have been four large wins in the area, together worth over €32.8 million.
Today, two groups who bought their winning tickets in the picturesque Dublin suburb of Dalkey, separately collected their prizes at National Lottery offices.
Ireland’s newest millionaires are a Dublin couple who won last night’s Lotto jackpot worth €4,806,105. The couple, who wish to keep their win private, bought their ticket in Dalkey News Centre, Castle St, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
“I’ve been playing Lotto since the game began and I always said that one day I’d hit the jackpot,” beamed the happy husband.
He continued: “I never watch the draw but for some reason I tuned in last night. I know my numbers by heart so when ‘20’ came out I thought ‘got that one.’ Then there was ‘4’ and I don’t really remember much after that.”
His wife took up the story: “I was half asleep when he came in and said ‘I have some news.’ I woke up quickly and saw he was very pale. I was worried something bad had happened. Then he just blurted out ‘I think we’ve won Lotto.’
The lucky couple bought the €128 Multi Draw ticket for a total of eight Lotto draws, starting with last Saturday’s draw. As well as the Lotto jackpot, the winners also took away €1,074 for matching numbers on other lines.
“I picked my own numbers years ago. At the time, I made the decision to pick a bizarre combination because I didn’t want anyone else to have the same numbers.
Last night, I checked the National Lottery website to see if there were any other winners. I saw there was one winner and thought ‘That’s me. I’m the one’,” said the husband.
The winners currently have no plans for the win but the husband added: “This means that if we see something we want, we can just get it.”
Two Dublin ladies who won the Lotto Plus 1 top prize of €350,000 in last Saturday’s draw (11 July 2009) also called to National Lottery offices today. The duo bought their €4 Quick Pick ticket in Dalkey Post Office.
“We’re occasional Lotto players and usually buy tickets separately but in these recessionary times, we decided to club together,” smiled one of the winners, as she sipped a celebratory glass of champagne. “We’ve proved to be very lucky for one another.”
The winners, who wish to remain anonymous, will share the win equally. They plan to look after family and might treat themselves to a holiday.
This is the second big win for Dalkey Post Office in less than two months. In May, a lucky couple from the West of Ireland scooped the second largest Lotto jackpot of the year worth €13,150,324 when they bought a €4 Quick Pick ticket in the Post Office.
The winning ways didn’t stop there for South County Dublin. Just over two miles away in Glenageary, a lucky husband and wife won the largest jackpot of the year so far worth a massive €14,530,193. The couple bought their €4 Quick Pick ticket in Spar, Glenageary Shopping Centre, Glenageary, Co Dublin for the draw on Saturday, 18 April 2009.
National Lottery good causes benefit from the Lotto draw, with one third of all sales (approx) going to fund Beneficiary projects around the country, as designated by Government.
Since the National Lottery was launched, over €3 billion has been raised for good causes. This level of funding has made a significant difference to communities, projects and individuals in the areas of Youth, Sports, Recreation & Amenities; Health & Welfare; Arts, Culture & National Heritage and the Irish Language.
