The Department of Social and Family Affairs says it has saved more than €228m in the first six months of this year by tightening fraud control measures on social welfare payments.
The department says the savings followed reviews of more than 300,000 claims.
Reviews of single-parent payments accounted for the biggest savings of €55m, followed by pensions (€45m) and sickness benefits (€40m).
The department says there has also been a six-fold increase in the number of people reporting suspected abuses of the system.
