Cheap Pints Revolution Continues!

Updated : Sep 2, 2009

DUBLIN bars will not end cheap drink promotions -- despite criticism of the Portobello bar for selling €4 pints in the afternoon.

The group MEAS (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society) ruled that the The Portobello's promotion amounted to offering 'Happy Hours', which are illegal.

The Odeon bar on Harcourt Street offers price concessions every Friday, with all draught beer and spirits charged at €4 and cocktails at €5.

"Our promotions are within guidelines. Times are tough and we need to attract customers but we also want to give something back," said manager Darren McLoughlin.

Dicey Reilly's on Harcourt Street, offers €3 a drink or cocktails for €5 every Thursday. The bar manager at Dicey's said that discounts on alcohol on Thursdays would continue.

"Obviously in the current climate, you have to be competitive and it makes business sense."

Dicey Reilly's is adamant that its offer is within guidelines and does not promote binge drinking and that it has the necessary safeguards in place.

Fibber Magee's, on Parnell Street. offers €2 a drink on Mondays after you pay an admission fee of €10. On Thursdays, the price of a drink is €3 after you pay an admission fee of €5.
