Free Condoms At Debs Ball
Updated : Sep 4, 2009
Organisers promoting safe sex will present free condoms to every couple attending a school debs' dinner.
The condoms will be put on the side plate of the men's place settings at the function. Women will get chocolates.
Most of the guests at the Montenotte Hotel will be aged between 17 and 19, and have just graduated from St Vincent's Secondary school in Cork city.
A spokesperson for the debs committee said: "It is a responsible thing to do."
A hotel spokesman said that he wasn't aware of the initiative but said that it was a matter for the private event's organisers.
And Andy Walker, the health promotion manager of the HSE South, said: "If young people are sexually active then condoms are the minimum precaution," he said. But Mary Crilly, the director of the Sexual Violence Centre in Cork, advised caution and said "throwing condoms on the table" may not be the right approach.
