Last Standing 'Men Only' Pub

Updated : Feb 1, 2009

Thomas Maher's Bar on O'Connell Street, Waterford is probaby one of Ireland's sole 'men only' pubs and the owner is actually a woman.

Since 1886, the pub, also known as Moondharrig House, has been serving ale and stout to it's all male clientele. In it's 123 year history, a woman has never been served alcohol and the only female allowed on the premises is owner and petite pensioner Mary Maher.

Mary, who inherited the pub when her husband Tom died, said: "The same rules stand today that applied to men and women when our doors opened.... No women. No children. No Smoking."

Mary is a strict publican who doesn't allow swearing, music, card playing, television or radio on her territory. There are also no stools in the pub "in case a tippler gets too comfortable and stays too long", one regular suggested.

Despite it's rigid rules, which sees the premises only open from 12 noon to 2pm and from 8.30pm to 10pm, the pub is hugely popular. (wonder why!!!)

VeryHappyPig thinks Mary likes to keep all the men for herself, eh??!!
