WW2 Prisoner Gets Birthday Card From Captor

Updated : Feb 19, 2009

A man held prisoner in a Japanese labour camp during World War II is set to celebrate his 90th birthday tomorrow with a card from one of his captors.

John Baxter, who suffered horrific treatment while being held captive, befriended a kindly guard named Hyato Hirano, who gave prisoners water despite other officers’ disgust.

John, from Wilts in the UK, said: “ It means a lot to get a card from Hyato for my 90th. It’s a very emotional time.”

The two men formed an unlikely bond after John was captured while serving in the British Army in Java in 1942 and were later reunited in 1995 at the 50th anniversary of VJ (Victory Over Japan) Day.

VeryHappyPig says Happy Birthday John!
