Basics Are Now Lost Skills

Updated : Mar 11, 2009

A survey carried out by Ask.com has revealed that more people know how set up a Facebook account than change a light bulb or rewire a sock.

Once considered skills essential for everyday life, the ability to darn a sock or change a wheel is no longer so important, according to the survey of lost skills

Of the 1,000 adults asked, only 49 per cent admitted they could darn a sock while just 42 per cent (and 22 per cent of under-30s) said they know how to knit. Only a third of respondents said they knew how to change a door lock or tile a bathroom. And a mere 34 per cent of the under-30s know how to rewire a plug. And with the declining popularity of the suit and tie - both at school and in the workplace - almost a third of young people can't knot a tie.

A spokesman for Ask.com said: “Many of these skills were once passed down from generation to generation but that no longer seems to happen.”

VeryHappyPig can do none of the above things, I am a pig after all!
