Credit Crunch Lunch!
Updated : Jun 29, 2009
One of Dublin's top watering holes has opened its doors to the traditional lunch box, as the home made sandwich is enroute to once again be crowned king of all things lunch.
The Wicked Wolf bar in Blackrock has ditched traditional pub food in favour of allowing customers to eat whatever food they want to bring and relax for the cost of a cheap cup of coffee.
It seems like an unlikely way to keep business afloat but pub owner Eugene Kenny says the "credit crunch lunch" is helping him ride out the VeryHappyPig’s banned R word.
The revived trend of lunchboxes and foil-wrapped sandwiches has seen a significant decrease in the number of workers purchasing the costly rolls and paninis.
But The Wicked Wolf says its new scheme is luring lunchtime punters back into the establishment.
Speaking to the Herald, Eugene said: "It's thinking outside the box and if you can increase your tea and coffee sales by 300pc by putting a sign out the front, it's a good idea any day. We used to sell maybe four or five cups of coffee a day and now we're selling about 75-80 cups of coffee a day at €2.35 a pop.
"We introduced it about six weeks ago and it's performing very well. Roughly 15-20 people are coming in every day for their lunch bringing everything from sushi from Marks & Spencer to sandwiches and ordinary salads from Huntson's deli around the corner."
